Description

Paisley’s Laigh Kirk was the first church built in Paisley following the reformation in 1560. Established in 1738 the church relieved pressure on the congregation of Paisley Abbey. It closed as a Church of Scotland congregation in 1820 when the congregation moved to St Georges (Low) chuch in George Street, but was subsequantly let out to seceeding congregations and finally closed for worship in the early 1980s. It was the acquired and transformed into Paisley Arts Centre.

The graveyard dates to 1738 and contains the remains of many Paisley Buddies be they Provosts, merchants, tradesmen or just local people, their stories tell the story of Paisley during the 18th and 19th Centuries.

The tour of the graveyard will take around 1.5 hours. You can enjoy warm drinks in Blend Coffee Lounge within the Arts Centre before or after the talk, where toilet facilites are also available.

The tours are free and are providedd by The Urban Historian and supported by Renfrewshire Council through the Culture, Heritagr and Events Fund.

We meet at Paisley Arts Centre, 15 New St, Paisley PA1 1EZ
